Contributing Factors

A Surprising Risk

According to the American Cancer Society, a few recent studies suggest that night-shift workers, such as night-time nurses or postal workers, may have a slightly elevated risk of developing breast cancer. Researchers are still trying to understand why this may be the case.

While breast cancer develops because of a mysterious interaction of different factors, researchers have associated some behaviors and lifestyle choices with higher risk. These include:

  • Being overweight or obese, especially in menopause
  • Drinking a glass or more of alcohol per day
  • Being physically inactive, especially in menopause
  • Night-shift work
  • Smoking

Remember, though, that just because any of these applies to you, doesn’t mean that you will necessarily develop the disease.
