Negative lymph biopsy

I have a question. CT scan looked at by pulmonologist showed swollen lymph nodes in my husbands chest. He said 95%  chance Stage III lung cancer.  He  smoked for many years and over the winter had a terrible viral bronchitis. This deep cough has lasted months, resulting in the XRay and CT scan. They did a lymph node biopsy last week and initial tests were negative- pathology was negative. They wanted to test another section of the lung but due to the excessive mucus, could not. Since this virus, my spouse has developed A fib too.  They want to do a PET scan to see if there are any malignancies as well as remove some "off" looking areas- which may be early lung cancer but they are not sure.  Cough is lifting now, no blood in sputum, no extreme weight loss.  Should I be relieved they are doing a double check and removing suspicious tissue- or petrified of the biopsy being incorrect and he IS stage III?
