Of all the side effects phlegm was one of, if not my most difficult one late in treatment.  In fact, it was so bad I had a hard time getting through my last dew radiation sessions without choking while laying on my back with that stupid mask!

I tried solutions, and even the suction machine but the best remedy was time.....a couple weeks after treatment ended it started to subside.

Good luck!

I think that was true with my husband also and he had started back to eating pretty good. However, about 11 months ago after being almost 6 years out and the phlegm started back up again and even worst before. It is also very sticky so it is hard for him to talk and to swallow, because he cannot swallow it because it is so thick.

Andy tried the suction machine also and doesn't seem to help.

the foods I've been able to eat are things that disolve with less saliva.  no bread, or other dry things, like meat has to be very moist.  I've also found with meat, the more fat in it the better.  Since I can't eat much of anything, I'm not worried to much about the calories.

I've discovered egg rolls, tacos, and salads work better than anything.

Anything acid irritates my throat.  sweet or too salty irritates my tongue.

I've heard that everyone has differing foods that they found.  Some say eggs worked well for them, but I found them hard to swallow, except deviled eggs without dill pickles, cause anything with vinegar was out.

One piece of advice that helped me was to go to buffets from time to time, taking a bit of everything I think I could try, to see what works for me.  potlucks would work also.

I don't know if you were talking to me, but this is what I've found.  don't know about organic gels.

I see on one of your posts that you are new here.  When does your treatment start?

try eating whatever you can as long as you can during treatment, drinking water as long as you can.

I just read an article from here that they are discovering that HPV caused throat cancers can have high success rates with less treatment, which means less side effects.

wish you the best and let us know how it goes

Hi Michael-

I too had thst after radiation.  I used a suction machine, which you can get through home health places.  It really helped clear that junk until things get back to normal.  Biotene (dry mouth over the counter stuff) also helps moisten your mouth.  Drink as much liquid as you can.  Be patient, it should improve soon.
