  Hello, My husband had Stage four HNSCC base if tongue and tonsil. He had 35 radiations 7 chemos erbitux. He then had a free flap reconstruction of Pharnx and base of the tongue because the radiation damaged all of those areas. First scans shiwed nodules in the lungs.   My husbands tumor was very large as well after radiation and chemo there was a big hole in his pharynx and base of tongue was 40 percent destroyed. Doctor Eric Genden at Mt Sinai in NYC did the free flap reconstruction surgery to rebuild his damaged areas. He now has a some hat normal eating process, however cancer has resurfaced in his lungs.   The stomach feeding tube better known in the medical field as the “peg” was great for adding what they call the formula which added a 350 calories a feeding. I know it seems scared but it helps so much to keep some weight on. My husband went from 230 to 160 he has leveled out to 185 which is a perfect wright for him.   I have been with my husband for 23 years when he got diagnosed with SSC HPV 16 related I was sure it was me who gave it to him. Well I recently went for my yearly visit with the gyno and found out that I was negative for HPV 16. I wished I had known that because since February 27, 2015 i felt awful that I passed it to him.   Thank you Susan,  Just wanted to share an update on the surgery it has been two weeks out from surgery and I wanted to let you know that so far all is going well. No rejection of the reconstructed tissue which they took from his thigh about a 24 inch incision. No infection which they told me could be 50 percent chance of that from the saliva that can seep into the wound. His tongue his very swollen and sticking...

  Hi All,  Tomorrow my wonderfully strong brave husband will undergo surgery for the cavity and remaining tumor after his seven week chemo/radiation treatments. His last treatment was May 22, 2015 and he has been waiting the three months for his PET scan which revealed a cavity in his throat which goes down to the jaw bone.   My husband had erbitux because of his hearing loss. the radiation caused most of the side effects. He did not have too many with it. It is a protein based medicine and seems to be less harsh then the cisplatin, however cisplatin would have been the first choice if not for the hearing loss.
